The Emotional Power of Colour in Your Space

In the dynamic world of interior design, colour isn't just about aesthetics – it's a powerful tool that shapes the way we experience and interact with our surroundings. As renowned Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung famously said, 'colours are the mother tongue of the subconscious,' highlighting the connection between colour and our emotions. So, understanding the feelings associated with colour is critical in the design process, closely tied to addressing the physical needs of a space. Let's explore some feelings associated with colours:

Red

The colour of passion and energy! It signifies ambition, drive, and the fiery excitement that gets your heart racing. However, it can also signal danger or stir up anger if overdone. In interior design, red is like a secret weapon, perfect for creating excitement in your kids playroom or creating a warm, inviting vibe in the kitchen.

Orange

The colour of enthusiasm and warmth! Like a burst of sunshine, it brings joy and creativity wherever it goes. However, too much orange can be overwhelming. In design, it's your fun, adventurous sidekick, ideal for spicing up the dining room or energising the living room. Paired with calmer tones, like soft neutrals keeps the vibe chilled and relaxed.

Yellow

The colour of sunshine and happiness! It fills your space with warmth and positivity, but too much can be overwhelming. When used in moderation, yellow brings joy to your home, perfect for brightening up the hallway or breakfast nook. You could balance it out with some cooler tones, like soft greens or calming greys, to keep the vibe balanced and harmonious.

Green

The colour of nature and tranquillity! Like a breath of fresh air, it brings calm and rejuvenation. Need to create a peaceful oasis in your bedroom or add a touch of serenity to your bathroom? Green's your best friend! A light green with grey can bring a fresh modern feeling to your space.

Blue

The colour of serenity and tranquillity! Like a calming wave, it washes away worries and stress. But too much blue can feel cold and distant. When used correctly, blue is a soothing balm for your home, great for a peaceful bedroom or productive home office. Too cool for you? Add in some warmer tones, like cosy browns or soft creams, to keep the vibe warm and inviting.

Purple

The colour of royalty and creativity! A majestic blend of passion and tranquillity, it exudes luxury and mystery. When used with a delicate touch, purple adds a splash of magic to your home, perfect for an opulent bedroom, inspiring home office or dramatic living room. If purple alone it too overwhelming, balance it out with some softer tones, like creamy whites or muted greys, to keep the vibe dreamy and serene.

White

The colour of purity and simplicity! A blank canvas ready for endless possibilities. But overdone white can feel clinical. In design, it's a breath of fresh air, perfect for creating a sense of space or adding modern elegance to your living room. In an all-white room you could combine black to create a classic look or layer the space with texture for warmth. Equally, why not use it as your neutral backdrop and add pops of colour with furniture or accessories choices?

Black

The colour of mystery and sophistication! A touch of glamour in a sea of ordinary. When used sparingly, it adds drama to your home, ideal for adding contrast to the living room or a sense of luxury to the bedroom as an accent. Paired with soft greys or muted pastels, will keep the vibe balanced and harmonious.

Consider Tints, Tones, and Shades

Let's dive into tints, tones, and shades – they're like the seasoning for your colour palette!

  • A tint adds a splash of white, bringing a soft and delicate vibe. Think pastel pinks or baby blues for a sweet, romantic bedroom.

  • Tones on the other hand mixes in a bit of grey, adding depth and sophistication. Picture muted mauves or dusky blues, perfect for an elegant living room.

  • And shades? They're like dimming the lights, creating a rich and moody atmosphere. Imagine deep burgundies or velvety blues for a dramatic dining room.

So, when choosing colours, keep in mind tints, tones, and shades – they're the secret ingredients for creating a perfectly balanced palette!

Choosing Colour for Your Space

Now that we've explored the emotional terrain of colour, let's dive into some practical tips for selecting the perfect palette for your space:

  1. Start with Purpose: Consider how you use each room on a daily basis. Bedrooms are sanctuaries for relaxation, so opt for calming hues like soft blues or gentle greens. Living rooms are bustling hubs of activity, making warm neutrals or vibrant yellows ideal.

  2. Assess Natural Light: Take note of natural light throughout the day. In sunlit living rooms, you can embrace deeper hues like rich burgundies or deep blues. In dimly lit areas or north-facing rooms, opt for lighter shades such as soft whites or pale pastels, unless you want to create a den-like feel.

  3. Apply the 60-30-10 Rule: Achieve balance and harmony by selecting a dominant colour (covering 60% of the space), a secondary colour (occupying 30% of the space), and pops of accent colour (making up the remaining 10%). For example, in a living room, you might choose a calming neutral as the dominant colour for the walls (60%), complemented by a contrasting shade for the furniture or accent walls (30%), and finally, add pops of vibrant colours through accessories like throw pillows or artwork (10%) to infuse personality into the space. If you’re going for a 2 colour scheme instead, go with a 70-30 split.

As you begin your own colour selection process, remember that understanding the impact of colour on your emotions is key to creating spaces that not only look beautiful but also resonate emotionally with you and anyone using them.

So, now that you’ve heard about colours and the vibes they can create, which ones will be featured in your living room or bedroom in the future and why?
